Vintage Design
This lovely long, narrow table was produced in Shanxi province during the early nineteenth century and as with most of good quality Shanxi furniture, it has survived the test of time. It is made from elm wood, with the original dark finish now worn on the thick, beautiful, deep grained top surface. The table top is made with a panel set within wide frames and the elm wood has aged to add a lovely depth and character to the grain. The apron below and thick, rounded legs – supported by double stretchers, have more traces of the original lacquer, with the natural wood beneath showing through, especially at the feet.
Originally the table would have been used as an altar table, positioned against a wall with offerings to the family’s ancestors placed on the table top, with burning insence sticks in holders. Today, the table would make a real statement as a large console for a reception room or long hallway.
