Vintage Design
Designed and produced in the 1950’s this set very much follows Mogensen design ethos of creating comfortable and practical furniture. Over the years his designs have stood the test of time and is now appreciated for its clean and uncluttered lines. This of course was the vogue for Danish furniture throughout the 1950s where the start of the Mid Century Modern movement grew out of the Scandinavian countries at that time and concentrated on functionality and a move towards more linear design.
This set features oak frames and beautiful cornflower blue upholstery and has clearly been reupholstered in more recent times. What sets it apart however, is the attention to detail and also the bespoke brass fittings I doubt you’ll find on any other set of the same style. I grew up with one of these bench sofas so I know how important the extra details are.
This design was produced with 8 individual cushions that just simply sat in place, and all other examples I’ve seen are the same. However, the problem is that they move around a lot so you are always redressing the sofa cushions back into place. Interestingly enough the armchairs don’t suffer from the same problem as they have brass fittings on the back that hold the cushions in place with loops through the frame. This sofa however, does have the brass fixings too and you can see the brass rods that hold the cushions in pace nestled in the back of the frame base. This is further complemented by brass popper fabric buckles that hold the seat cushions firmly in place at the top.
The backs of both the armchairs and sofa are so beautifully crafted that it’s a pleasure to see the contoured rails on the armchairs and slatted back on the sofa. As they look great from any angle it means that they need not be placed against a wall so could be a freestanding set in the middle of a room. The set however, despite the lovely blue upholstery, does look a little stark without dressing and therefore becomes much more inviting with the addition of cushions and throws, in fact, exactly as you would expect to see in a Mid Century inspired home.
It’s presented in very good vintage condition with a few marks to the frames as you would expect. However, the upholstery is in perfect condition with no stains, marks, holes or tears.
